Orville Wright once said, “Wilbur and I could hardly wait for morning to come to get at something that interested us. That’s Happiness.” On December 17, 1903, the morning that likely interested the Wright Brothers most of all, had arrived. Undaunted by prior attempts to construct the first powered flying machine, Wilbur and Orville at last achieved their goal of controlled flight. As most people who have even just brushed the shoulders of history know, FLYER 1 took off from the sands of Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina – not just adding to the narrative of modern man, but searing its pages to ash. A new book was surely being written. The first flight lasted approximately 59 seconds and covered 852 feet of ground, catapulting the collective imagination into unknown, marvelous frontiers. Nearly 100 years and countless technological leaps later, we can’t help but still look upon the twosome with reverence and astonishment.
